Elena Mazzone

Graduated in 1999 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bologna, Italy in physiotherapy with a final dissertation in: “Clinical value of myometry in Spinal Muscular Atrophy: strength-functional assessment correlation”. PhD in Neuroscience

With the lack for appropriate and specific research and clinical guidelines within the rehabilitation field, I pursued a specific effort to develop assessments to be used in the implementation of standards of care and to be used as outcome measures in clinical trials.

My 20-year clinical experience with neuromuscular patients is reflected in my co-leadership within the rehabilitation working group of the updated International Standards of Care in SMA and other international efforts.

I have been working for the past 10 years at the Catholic University in Rome, Italy in an internationally recognized neuromuscular center and within international neuromuscular research networks.

I am at present a master trainer in SMA therapeutic clinical trials, on different advisory boards and have collaborated and played a key role in the development of specific outcome measures in SMA and DMD such as the RULM, CHOP INTEND and Revised Hammersmith Scale.

Have extensively published articles on the value of standardized assessments in neuromuscular disorders and their application as clinical outcome measures in clinical trials.
